Learning targets

Page history last edited by davidwhitfield@... 1 yr ago

At the heart of TARGETmath are the learning targets.

To view screen shots of TARGETmath go to the assessment page.

They were originally written as an attempt to turn the Oregon state standards into student-friendly targets. Since, they have been edited and re-edited in the light of class-room needs and experience.

They are all written in the form… "I can… "

These targets basically cover the Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 courses. But I think they go beyond that. The targets have been expanded from the originals more on the basis of detail, nuance and what a student needs to understand prior to tackling a new target.

Nearly 2,000 questions in the TARGETmathd database are now attached to the targets in the database. Each question is attached to a target. The targets, and questions, can be very tightly or very broadly searched.

Student notes — both long and short — are also attached to many of the targets, but not yet all. Some targets also have diagrams or pictures attached.

Many of the learning targets are grouped into units for instruction.

Many of the targets seem repetitive, and many are. But the nuance is different. Learning targets are also crucially used by the TARGETmath system for feeding back to students areas of revision or weakness. The nuance can make a difference.

Targets that are in the realm of pre-algebra are numbered 0 to 99. Algebra 1 is covered by targets 100 to 199 and Algebra 2 listed under 200 +. There are many that have been dumped in the range of 300+ or even 400+. These latter targets are largely unused.

Currently I teach Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, so these are the most detailed. There are no geometry targets to speak of as I taught geometry pre-TARGETmath. Next year I am scheduled to teach calculus so I expect to work on appropriate targets over the summer.

Attached here are the current targets and their target numbers.

I hope next to post the notes attached to the targets. And then the questions.
